Roman Shades

Choices and Styles

There are many options for your home design when it comes to choosing window coverings.  One of these options is blinds, or shades as they are sometimes called.  Blinds are an excellent alternative to curtains for a number of reasons.  They often come in more neutral colors to blend better with any interior design scheme.  The durability of blinds is also another factor in their selection.  Some of the choices for blinds include roman shades, vertical blinds and wooden blinds.

Wooden blinds are classic and tasteful and compliment almost any décor with their clean, complimentary styles.  Although among the higher end of the price range, if you choose to afford them it will be well worth it to have these blinds in your home.  Wood blinds can be most often made of hardwood, typically ramin wood or bass wood.  You have the option to have them painted or richly stained, making it easy for them to match your décor no matter what it is.  Wood blinds also have a no holes option for optimal light blockage.  Some are even motorized for opening and closer, which makes them safer.  This is ideal if you would like the look of blinds but have small children who you do not want to risk getting hurt with the cords.

Roman shades are the window covering opposite of wood blinds.  Roman shades are fabric blinds and afford the buyer with all the versatility of fabric choices with the convenience of blinds.  The common feature options for these window treatments are sheer, blackout, room darkening, light filtering and even insulated.  The savvy shopper can pick from other options and design choices such as weaves, solids, specialized patterns and interesting textures for their fabric blinds.  Interestingly enough, it is also not difficult to find detailed instructions for crafting your own fabric blinds if you would like to embark on a hands-own interior design approach.  Fabric shades are classy, elegant, and simple and can be designed to fit in any room, on any window, for any décor.

A third option is the traditional vertical blind.  These blinds are unique and yet still combine some element of the roman shade and the wooden blinds.  Some of the variants include perforated vertical blinds, smooth and ribbed, fabric, s-shaped and outdoor-oriented blinds.  You can also find these made out of PVS materials, mirror, wood, sheer, and have them motorized.  These are essentially made out of anything you want in a vertical slatted pattern, just like the simple blinds you find on many patio doors.  The difference here is customization.

There are many blind options to choose from and it is important to weigh and measure the pros and cons of each as they fit your own home and your budget.
